Core Rule
"We do not read it for the headline. We read it for where demand is breaking and where it is starting."
The composite headline (>50 / <50 threshold) is a lagging average of five equal-weighted sub-indexes. The alpha is in the sub-indexes and sector-level reads. Track momentum streaks, not snapshots — a regime change shows up as 8 months of expansion followed by a single inflection month.
ISM Manufacturing PMI — Composite Sub-Indexes
Equal-weighted · Released 1st business day of month · 10:00 AM ET
Sub-Index Weight Timing Signal Logic
New Orders
20%
Leading Most forward-looking component. Falling orders precede production cuts by 1–3 months. Primary watch.
Production
20%
Coincident Current output. Confirms or denies what New Orders is signaling.
Employment
20%
Lagging Hiring/firing by purchasing managers. Lags New Orders. Cross-reference with BLS jobs data.
Supplier Deliveries
20%
Inverted Inverted: SLOWER deliveries = high demand = bullish. FASTER deliveries = demand slackening = bearish. This sub-index moves opposite to the others.
Inventories
20%
Context Context-dependent. Rising during pullback = demand destruction. Rising during expansion = restocking cycle. Read with New Orders.
Non-Composite Sub-Indexes (Read Separately)
Published alongside composite but not included in headline
Sub-IndexWhat It Signals
Prices Paid Goods inflation signal. Leads CPI/PPI by 1–2 months. Divergence with New Orders = supply shock (not demand-driven).
Backlog of Orders Demand backlog. Confirms New Orders momentum. Rising backlog + rising New Orders = strong expansion signal.
New Export Orders International demand. Useful for isolating domestic vs. global cycle.
Imports Domestic demand for foreign inputs. Rising = domestic demand is pulling in more goods.
Customer Inventories If customers rate their stocks "too low" → restocking cycle imminent → bullish demand for 1–3 months ahead.

Options Signal
2,500 calls + 2,500 puts at the same Dec strike on NNW. Puts finance the calls. This is a directional bet (synthetic long) — not a vol bet. Conviction: trucking higher by December.
ISM Services PMI
Released 3rd business day of month · 10:00 AM ET · ~80% of U.S. economy

Services often moves independently from manufacturing. Critical for "supercore" inflation tracking (services prices = stickiest component).

Sub-IndexNote
Business ActivityProduction equivalent for services sector.
New OrdersForward-looking. Same logic as manufacturing.
EmploymentLagging. Cross-check vs. BLS JOLTS.
Supplier DeliveriesSame inversion logic as manufacturing.
PricesCritical. Services inflation is stickier than goods. Leads core CPI services sub-component.

Apparel
~2.4%
Tariff-sensitive; import price index leads
OER — The Most Important Nuance
Critical Lag
Owners' Equivalent Rent (OER) is ~26% of CPI alone — the single largest component. BLS collects it via survey ("What would your home rent for?") — not from actual market transactions. This introduces a 12–18 month lag vs. real-time rental market data.
Leading indicators for OER (in order of lead time):
Zillow ZORI
Leads OER by ~12 months. Best available public signal.
Apartment List
Leads by 10–12 months. National rent report, monthly.
CoreLogic Rent
Leads by 8–10 months.
AIRC same-store revenue
Real operational data from Apartment Income REIT.
Implication: when real rents are falling, CPI shelter keeps rising for over a year. The disinflation you see in ZORI today shows up in headline CPI in 2027.
PCE vs CPI — Fed Targets PCE
CategoryPCE WeightCPI WeightImplication
Shelter ~16% ~34% PCE shelter weight is half of CPI. PCE disinflates faster as rents fall.
Health care ~17% ~7% PCE uses producer-side health prices (lower). CPI uses consumer-paid prices (higher).
Supercore
PCE Services ex-Housing = Fed's preferred sticky-inflation signal. Contains: medical care, education, recreation services, personal care, financial services, airfares. Only cools with genuine labor market slack — least amenable to supply-side fixes.

PMI × CPI Regime Matrix
New Orders direction (demand) × Prices Paid direction (inflation pressure)
Prices Paid ↑ Rising
Prices Paid ↓ Falling
New Orders ↑ Rising
Demand-Pull Expansion. Both demand and inflation rising together. Classic late-cycle.
Sweet Spot Demand OK, costs falling. Best risk/reward. Equities typically rally.
New Orders ↓ Falling
Supply Shock Falling demand + rising prices. Stagflation risk. Don't short constrained supply; avoid capex plays.
Demand Destruction Recession signal. Demand and prices both falling. Risk-off. Duration + cash.

GIP Quad Linkage — Methodology
How PMI feeds into the quad engine
Per finance/macro/quad/gip_engine.py and plans/hedgeye-gip-estimate-provenance.md:
  • CPI YoY → GIP CPI column (NSA series CPIAUCNS — matches Hedgeye methodology)
  • CPI sequential RoC → SA series CPIAUCSL (seasonal adjustment mandatory for timing)
  • GDP YoY + CPI YoY → Quad classifier (Q1/Q2/Q3/Q4)
  • PMI New Orders direction → leading indicator for quad transition (1–2 month lead)
Hedgeye dual-speed RoC
YoY = CLASSIFIER (which quad). Sequential = TIMING (when we enter/exit). Never use MoM or QoQ for the classifier — only YoY. See: memory/reference_hedgeye_dual_speed_rate_of_change.md
